Donations

Although we receive funding we are still a long way off from having the resources we need to meet the demands for our service.

Ways to donate:

Donate at www.givealittle.co.nz/org/Hestia

We greatly appreciate your donations and your support of our service. As we are a registered charity, you are able to get a tax rebate on your donation.

Other ways to donate:

Through our second-hand shop The Kowhai Tree in Silverdale.  Our clients are able to “shop” for essential items free of charge directly from donations received at the shop and we are able to purchase other essential items from the profits made from the excess items that are sold.  Thanks to generous donations from the public we are able to provide clothing for families who arrive with nothing and assist families with furniture, bedding and other household items as they build new lives. This can make a significant difference to a family who may have had to leave their home with few of their belongings.

Frequently Asked Questions about The Kowhai Tree

How do you support Women’s Refuge?

The Kowhai Tree is fully owned and operated by Hestia Rodney Women’s Refuge.  Proceeds from the store go directly to us, so anything you donate or buy is helping the cause.

Women in our community who are being supported by Hestia, may be referred to the store, where they can obtain the items they need (such as furniture, clothing, homewares) without charge.

How can I donate?

Donations can be brought directly to the store between the hours of 9am and 3pm Monday to Friday and 9am and 2pm on Saturdays. We are closed on Sundays.

Please don’t leave your donations outside the store if we are closed. This causes a lot of problems as people rifle through the bags and strew things around the pavement and car-park, which is disruptive to neighbouring businesses and can be dangerous. We have had times when sharp knives and broken glass have been left outside, and there are often children in the area.

What can I donate?

We are very grateful for the support we receive from the local community and try to accept as much as we possibly can, but we are quite a small store so can be limited by space.

Our needs vary a lot so it’s best to call (09 421 0580) before bringing your donation to check we are able to accept your items. We almost always need good quality, clean clothing, linen, towels and housewares. We are not always able to accept books and toys (particularly soft toys) as we can get overloaded with these.

We can take good quality furniture by prior arrangement, as this depends on space availability. Lounge suites and mattresses need to be clean and without rips or stains.

We are unable to accept electrical items or small appliances. The exception to this is white-ware which we may be able to take by prior arrangement but please don’t deliver this directly to the store as we don’t have storage space here for it.

We also welcome non-perishable food items for the food parcels we distribute throughout the year.

Can you collect my donations?

We can sometimes collect furniture items within the immediate area (Albany, Silverdale, Orewa, Whangaparaoa), but it helps us enormously if you can deliver to us. This is because we are mainly staffed by volunteers and aren’t always able to get out and about with our small van.

I’d like to volunteer – what do I do?

We have a wonderful team of volunteers and are always interested in hearing from people who can commit to a fixed slot each week (usually around 3 hours morning or afternoon. The work can involve a fair bit of lifting, so may not be suitable if you have an injury. All volunteers need to complete a Police Vetting check before beginning work.

If you are interested in volunteering call into the store and chat to one of the managers – Sara or Leighann.
