Who is Hestia Rodney Women's Refuge and how can you help?
Women’s Refuge provides free, confidential support to women and their children experiencing domestic, family or whānau violence. We offer emotional and practical support, safety planning, advocacy, and access to services designed to help you live free from violence.
How do I get support if I am in danger right now?
If you are in immediate danger, call 111 and ask for the police.
For urgent support and to speak with a trained advocate confidentially, call our 24/7 Crisis Line: 0800 733 843. This line is free and available any time, day or night.
What types of support do you provide?
We can help with:
- Safety planning and emotional support
- Access to temporary safe accommodation
- Advocacy with police, legal, and community services
- Referrals to counselling and other specialised support
- Support for children and tamariki affected by violence
Is it safe to reach out?
Yes. All contact with the refuge and helplines is private and confidential. If you’re worried about your activity being discovered by someone who is abusive or controlling, there are safe online tools designed to help you access support while protecting your privacy.
Do I have to leave my home to get help?
No – support is available even if you do not want to or cannot leave your home right now. Some services can help you to stay safely in your home with a personalised safety plan.
Can I bring my children with me?
Yes. Our services are designed to support both you and your children. We aim to keep families together whenever it is safe to do so and provide specific assistance for tamariki as part of our holistic support approach.
Will someone know I contacted you? Is it confidential?
Your privacy and safety are our highest priority. All contact with Women’s Refuge is confidential and handled with great care to protect you and your family.
What if I'm not ready to leave the relationship?
It’s completely okay if you’re not ready to leave right now. Leaving an abusive relationship is often a process, and many people reach out for support while they’re still deciding. Support services can help you with safety planning, coping strategies, and exploring your options at your pace.
Is there a cost for services or accommodation?
Support from Women’s Refuge, including crisis support, safety planning and advocacy, is free. In some cases where temporary accommodation is provided, there may be discussion around available financial support – but safety and care come first.
How can I support the refuge or get involved?
You can support our work by donating money, goods, or your time as a volunteer. We welcome involvement in events, fundraising, and advocacy to help women and children live free from fear. All contributions, big or small, make a difference.
