Common Questions
Here’s what you might be wondering about volunteering
Have more questions to ask?
We understand that you might have questions as you consider volunteering with us. It’s important to feel confident in your decision. Here are some common queries we receive, along with their answers to help guide you.
What kinds of volunteer roles do you offer?
Volunteer roles vary depending on current needs. Most support is in our op shop, donation sorting, events, fundraising, admin help, and community initiatives.
Can I volunteer directly with women and families in crisis / at the safe house?
For safety and confidentiality reasons, volunteer roles are never client-facing. Our specialist support work is delivered by trained staff. There are still many meaningful ways to help behind the scenes.
Do I need experience or specific qualifications?
Not always. We value reliability, good communication, and a willingness to learn. Some roles may suit people with specific skills (e.g., admin, marketing, events, retail).
What qualities do you look for in volunteers?
Warmth, discretion, reliability, and a non-judgemental attitude. Because we support people impacted by family violence, confidentiality and respectful communication are essential.
How much time do I need to commit?
It depends on the role. Some volunteers help weekly or fortnightly, others support one-off events or projects. We’ll talk with you about what’s realistic.
What’s the process to apply?
Get in touch with us first. We’ll ask a few questions about your availability and interests, then arrange a chat to find the best fit. Some roles may require reference checks and/or a Police vet.
Do you require a Police vetting check?
Some roles do, especially where there’s any connection to sensitive information or refuge operations. We’ll let you know what’s required for the role you’re interested in.
Can I volunteer as a group (workplace, school, sports club)?
Sometimes. Group support can work well for specific projects (like working bees, donation drives, or event support). Contact us with your group size and what you’d like to do.
I have a specific skill (marketing, photography, legal, trades). Can I help?
Yes — skilled volunteering can make a huge difference. Send us a message outlining your skillset, availability, and what you’d like to contribute.
What if I find the work emotionally heavy?
That’s completely understandable. All roles are not client-facing, and we’ll help place you where you feel comfortable. You can also pause or step back at any time.
How else can I support if I can’t volunteer?
You can donate, fundraise, share our posts, support the Kowhai Tree Op Shop, or run a donation drive through your workplace or community group.
